James Jones shielded his mother from a spray of bullets that then claimed his life outside their Chicago home, local reports said.
“He used his body to shield her, to save her,” the mom’s sister, Dietra Luckett, told the Chicago Tribune of her nephew’s deed.
He had been home at the 8400 block of South Colfax Avenue while out on parole after serving a prison sentence for attempted burglary, the Sun-Times reported.
A gunman approached the home and opened fire, giving Jones only enough time to protect his mother, Alicia Jones.
The aunt blamed the 21-year-old’s death on gang violence.
He is the third child Jones has lost to Chicago violence since 1994 when her son, Curtis, was killed by a Molotov cocktail chucked through a window, the Tribune reported citing its archives.
Her daughter, Antoinette Means, a 19-year-old high school valedictorian, was murdered in 2006 when a gunman robbed a KFC where she worked.
