A Bolton man killed while fighting against the Islamic State in Syria will be remembered in a funeral service Wednesday in a Hudson church.

The service for Keith Broomfield, 36, who was killed in skirmish between Islamic State fighters and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Baptist Church in Hudson. Burial services will be private.

Calling hours will be held at the church Tuesday, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The family is requesting that anyone who wishes to make a donation in Broomfield’s memory, give to Samaritan’s Purse, a nondenominational evangelical Christian organization that provides relief aid around the world.

Little information has been released about Broomfield’s death, according to reports. A statement by the Kurdish group hailed him as a martyr, and hundreds gathered near the Turkish border to honor him as his casket was carried through the streets.

Broomfield’s body was returned to Massachusetts Saturday evening, according to Broomfield’s sister Corinne Maleski, who said she and her family were grateful for the respect they were shown by the people of Kurdistan.

“We would like to thank everyone involved with his safe transport and especially the people of Kurdistan for showing him such respect,” Maleski said in an email Saturday night.
