All the lying has had a very negative effect on the family as well.
Via Daily Mail:
The white NAACP leader at the center of a race storm after misrepresenting herself as a black woman for years told her brother: ‘Don’t blow my cover’.
Rachel Dolezal, 37, was exposed after her parents revealed her European heritage – though she insists that she still identifies herself as black and says she doesn’t ‘give two sh*ts’ what anybody else has to say.
However, her adopted brother Ezra, 22, has revealed how anxious Dolezal was to cover up her ethnicity when she moved west from Montana to craft a ‘whole new identity’ for herself.
Speaking with BuzzFeed News, Ezra Dolezal recalled going to Spokane in 2012 to meet his sister, to discover she had erased her family back home and had persuaded a black man to pretend to be her father.
He revealed Dolezal told him him: ‘Over here, I’m going to be considered black, and I have a black father. Don’t blow my cover.’
‘She wanted to make a new life for herself but she took it to the ultimate extreme, – Not only did she move out to Spokane, but she created a whole new identity for herself.’Ezra revealed that his sister started acting ‘hateful to white people’ after attending Howard University to get a Master of Fine Arts degree.
A blog post last year from her adopted sister also accused Rachel of being fake:
And now she acts like I owe her all this loyalty because we’re sisters. Honestly she pisses me off. She talks about being real, and not lying to people, but she’s been lying to all her friends. She says she’s African American, but she’s German Caucasian. All her friends think she’s just a light skinned black person, and that’s what she wants them to believe. She’s all about representing your race, but she abandoned her own. She’s a living contradiction, but she wants to critique everyone else about being a hypocrite. I mean she’s so big on ‘family’, but only when it fits her version of what it should be.

Update:
More from Ezra on the psychology of his sister. He says he doesn’t believe anything Rachel says, that there was no abuse in the family, and that she became hateful toward white people while at Howard University, a historically black college:
Ezra believes the only reason his sister would change her identity was due to the racism she claimed to have encountered at Howard University, where she graduated with her master’s degree in fine art in 2002.
Rachel, he added, would often complain that she was treated poorly as one of only a few white students on a mostly black campus.
“She used to tell us that teachers treated her differently than other people and a lot of them acted like they didn’t want her there,” Ezra said. “Because of her work in African-American art, they thought she was a black student during her application, but they ended up with a white person.”
He said that the experience made her angry, and it was then that Rachel started being “hateful to white people.”
