Ohio Gov. John Kasich on Sunday lauded the residents and leaders of Cleveland for their response to the acquittal of a police officer involved in a 2012 shooting that left two unarmed people dead.

“What I will say is that I think the people of Cleveland handled this, I mean, they should be so proud of themselves and we should look at Cleveland as a model,” Kasich (R) said during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.”

His comments came in the wake of Saturday’s acquittal of Michael Brelo, who stood trial for his role in the deaths of 43-year-old Timothy Russell and 30-year-old Malissa Williams.[…]

“We only moved in to make arrests when things got violent and protesters refused to disperse,” Police Chief Calvin Williams said Sunday, according to the media group. “We wanted to make sure people understand we are going to help you in this process, but if things turn violent, we will take action to preserve safety.”

Police reported that one man threw something through a restaurant window, which injured a woman. Williams told the Northeast Ohio Media Group that authorities believed other protesters later also deployed pepper spray on people who were outside in the area.
