The body of an officer with the Housing Authority of New Orleans who was shot dead while driving was found inside of his HANO police cruiser early on Sunday morning.

The officer, whose name has not been released and had been with the HANO for about two years, died of a gunshot wound.

The body was found by officers from the New Orleans Police Department around 7am in Central City.

The officer was shot dead while driving his squad car, according to Michael Harrison of the NOPD.

He was working a security detail at the construction site of the Guste Homes public housing complex when he was shot, the Times-Picayune reported.

It’s not clear if the officer, who was working an overtime shift, was directly targeted.

Harrison said: ‘We don’t know what happened, and we don’t want to speculate.’

NOPD officers found the car where it came to a stop near the corner of Erato and Freret streets and discovered that the driver’s side window broken, according to WWL.
