The Islamic State’s seizure of Ramadi was also a U.S. weapons bonanza for the terrorist group.  As Iraqi troops fled the field of battle in fear, ISIS moved in quickly to confiscate the U.S. military equipment and weapons they left behind.  According to numerous news outlets, the Islamic State seized “dozens of pieces of U.S. military equipment, including tanks, armored personnel carriers, and artillery pieces,” as the Iraqi army disintegrated.

A Pentagon spokesman, Col. Steve Warren, estimated that: “a half dozen U.S. tanks were abandoned, a similar number of artillery pieces, a larger number of armored personnel carriers, and about 100 wheeled vehicles — like Humvees.  Some of the vehicles were in working condition; and, some were not…as they hadn’t been moved in months,” he added.  But, it didn’t take long for the Islamic State to find a way to overcome this obstacle — as the group had already been running advertisements in Lebanese newspapers and elsewhere, including social media — recruiting personnel who can “operate and maintain U.S. military equipment.”
