President Obama highlighted some of the steps Camden, long known for its high crime rates, took to become a safer place:
“So two years ago, the police department was overhauled to implement a new model of community policing. They doubled the size of the force while keeping it unionized. They cut desk jobs while getting more officers out into the streets.”
However, the President, as well as his Task Force on 21st Century Policing’s 120-page report, omitted a significant fact about the young department: Camden made the bulk of its improvements without the presence of a police union.
