A senior Democratic lawmaker is pushing to create tax credits for people who turn in assault rifles to the government.

Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro recently introduced the SAFER Streets Act, which would provide tax credits of up to $2,000 over a two-year period for firearms. The tax break would be based on the “fair market value” of the weapon handed in.
