This is an interview with Donta Allen, the man who claims he was in the back of the same van as Freddie Gray, separated by a partition. The WaPo had reported on that the other man in the van said Gray sounded like he was banging his head into the van walls.
This interview is unclear and perhaps a deliberate attempt to impeach his own credibility. The main gist seems to be that he is minimizing the banging he says he heard. He says at various points different things; he says he heard Gray banging his head. But then he later says it was Gray’s body banging around, that Gray was ‘out’ before he was put in the van. He also says that Gray was dead when they reached the police station, which couldn’t possibly be true, since Gray didn’t die until a week later.
Allen claims that the ride was smooth, so at least while he was in the van, there was no ‘rough ride’.
Allen makes clear at the end of the interview what his concern in giving this interview, that he not be seen as talking to the police, that he is down with the peeps and with the memory of Freddie Gray.
