U.S. counterterrorism operations killed four innocent hostages — including three Americans — in two separate attacks this year, the White House said Thursday.
President Obama is expected to give a statement on the revelations at 10 a.m.
The four hostages had been held by al-Qaeda, the White House said, and the hostages were killed in attacks on the terrorist group.
“The operation targeted an al-Qa’ida-associated compound, where we had no reason to believe either hostage was present, located in the border region of Afghanistan and Pakistan,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest said in a statement.
“No words can fully express our regret over this terrible tragedy.”
The White House added that the military killed two other Americans who worked with al-Qaeda: Ahmed Farouq and Adam Gadahn.
Farouq, an al-Qaeda leader, died in the same operation where the two hostages were killed. Gadahn, who went by the nickname, “Azzam the American,” served as a spokesman for the group.
These attacks happened months ago. No word on why they are just announcing it now today when there is no other news happening…
