Trevor Noah is confirmed as the new host of the “Daily Show,” and one of the show’s co-creators is absolutely stoked the show is not helmed by a white man any longer.
Appearing on “News Nation” with MSNBC host Tamron Hall, the show’s co-creator Lizz Winstead remarked that her initial reaction to the Noah’s hiring was, “thank god it’s not a white guy.”
“When you heard the name, tell the truth, what was your gut reaction?” Hall asked the show’s founder.
“My gut reaction was thank god it’s not a white guy,” said Winstead. “I have to be honest.”
“Why did that matter to you?!” asked a surprised Hall
“I just really wanted to have a wide swath of a different kind of lens in the ‘Daily Show,’” Winstead said.[…]
“What about a woman?” Hall asked.
“A woman would have been awesome too,” Winstead said. “I was like, oh good, they actually didn’t go with another guy who could fit the bill. And I was excited.”
“I went back — I was kind of like everybody else,” Winstead said. “Trevor is famous outside of the United States and his — like I, when he started on the ‘Daily Show’ I followed him on Twitter then and I watched some of his stand-up and story is compelling.”
