A California high school teacher transitioned to woman from a man over the weekend, surprising students and parents.

Amanda Swager, a chemistry teacher at Chino High School, was raised as a boy named Michael, but learned later in life she was genetically female, CBS Los Angeles reported.

She had begun a gradual, private transition and planned to go public after the summer break, but prying students prompted her to rush her coming out party, Swager said.

“I was in a movie theater with my boyfriend, and some students walk in and start shooting pictures of me in a movie theater,” she told CBS Los Angeles.

The towering 32-year-old debuted her new identity — and name — on Monday when she arrived in a skirt and blouse.

The early response has been mostly supportive, although some parents have complained about the sudden surprise, Swager said.

Several parents, who declined to give their full names, told NBC Los Angeles they should have been given advance notice so they could prepare their kids.

“This probably brought or is going to bring disruption in the classroom because all these questions need to be answered,” a dad named Rusty told NBC Los Angeles. “They’re going to want to know why did the teacher did what he did.”
