Japanese lawmakers have formed a bi-partisan committee ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to assure the country is 100% welcoming of LGBT athletes and visitors.
Japan will play host to the world in 2020 when the Summer Olympics are held in Tokyo. The country is already busily preparing for the event. Athletes are training. Construction workers are building modernistic stadiums like the one in the image above. Volunteers are being hired. And the country’s legislators are reviewing the laws and customs concerning the LGBT community, eager not to repeat the anti-gay atmosphere that tarnished the Socci Games.
Gay Star News reports that thirty-eight lawmakers, 13 from the majority LDP Party, and 12 from the minority party, have formed a committee to assure there are no impediments to LGBT acceptance during the Tokyo Games. You will recall that the International Olympic Committee added sexual orientation to its anti-discrimination policy after it contracted with Tokyo to host, but Japan is eager to voluntarily meet that new standard.
“As it hosts the Olympic Games, there is no doubt that Japanese society will be questioned on how it treats its sexual minorities. Said Hiroshi Hase who chairs the committee. “We must substantiate the principles described in the basic plan of the Games.”
The group will meet with LGBT advocates to illicit their suggestions and study what works and doesn’t work in other countries. They will then review Japanese law and suggest revisions. If necessary, the committee says it will introduce new bills they find are needed to assure LGBT acceptance.
Citius, altius, fortius. Way to go Japan!
