As the Islamic State continues waging a campaign to demolish non-religious monuments in its sphere of influence, the group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, has gone on to call for the destruction of the Egyptian pyramids and iconic Sphinx, Al Alam news reports.
Calling it a “religious duty,” targeting of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World would be the most ambitious fulfillment of the interpretation of Islam that views shrines, statues, art, idols not intended for the worship of God as an affront to the Muslim faith.
While it’s highly unlikely that the Giza necropolis is in any imminent danger, it is a cause for alarm that the group seems to be taking more proactive steps to flatten history in its attempts to establish an Islamic Caliphate.
The international community has grown increasingly concerned that vital pieces of humanity’s early history could soon vanish if steps aren’t taken to secure these monuments.
