During a recent press event regarding the battle over the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill, Nancy Pelosi attempted to address how difficult it was for people – even members of Congress – to go without timely paychecks.

The California representative, who is worth $29.01 million herself, said:

“I don’t know about you, but I think almost everybody I know cannot live without having a paycheck on time–members of Congress, even. And yet they’re (Republicans) asking the Department of Homeland Security people to do that.”

What Pelosi did not mention is that the average annual salary of a member of Congress is $174,000 plus benefits.

According to a joint study between Our Generation (OG), and Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA), that puts members of Congress in the top 5% of the country in terms of wealth. Comparing that with the average American salary of $50,875 annually, members of Congress earn 3.42 times the average American salary.
