On MSNBC this afternoon, network host Chris Matthews said Republicans in Congress who oppose funding President Obama’s immigration executive action are “speak[ing] for whites.” Matthews also said it’s “rural people, Southern people” who oppose the funding.

“It’s not every Republican,” Matthews said on the soon-to-be-canceled Reid Report. “It’s not Peter King. It’s not the eastern guys. [It’s] rural people, Southern people, you know. They don’t speak for every American. They speak for the whites basically, the Anglos. It’s a stupid term, Anglos, if we’re not Hispanic, but it’s the term used. I think it’s politics. I think the tea party is still very strong in the Republican party.”

JOY REID, MSNBC: Please explain to me how when a compromise has been handed to House Speaker John Boehner by Mitch McConnell, whatever you think of him, he’s a hell of a negotiator. He’s created a split vote where his caucus can vote on their immigration — they don’t like the immigration thing, their dyspepsia. They can vote on that. And then they can vote on a clean DHS bill through. Why doesn’t John Boehner just take that up and go for it?

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Well, because, probably 50 or 100 members of his caucus don’t want to go home to a primary fight. They don’t want to face their own people at home who say, “You opened the door on illegal immigration. You just gave them the gate. You opened the door and they’re all here legally now, all the Hispanic people. That’s because of you. You did that. Why don’t you enforce the law? How come you gave the president what he wanted in the executive order? Why didn’t you stand up to the president?”
