At least one winner at Sunday night’s Academy Awards ceremony used her speech to speak out on political and social issues, adding to the show’s long history of unscripted and unexpected moments.
In her acceptance speech for best supporting actress in “Boyhood,” Patricia Arquette delivered a forceful message for equal rights and pay for women in the U.S.
“To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation. We have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all, and equal rights for women in the United States of America,” she said.
The audience erupted in cheers and applause, with fellow nominee Meryl Streep pointing her finger in agreement.
The Oscar-winning actress has donated to Democratic efforts in the past, backing John Kerry for president in 2004 and Barack Obama in 2008. She also contributed to Green Party candidate Ralph Nader in 2000.
