Dan Little, the husband of Secretary of State Kate Brown, has typically stayed separate from his wife’s political career — and there’s been no word from the Brown camp that this will change much when she becomes governor.

Little, 55, is a veteran U.S. Forest Service data expert whose job is more technical than political. Friends and acquaintances of Brown say they’ve never seen him play much of a role in her political work, other than to be a supportive spouse after a long day.

“Their professional lives are completely separated,” said Glen Sachet, a spokesman for the Pacific Northwest region of the U.S. Forest Service. “Their paths don’t cross.”

The issue of the governor’s spouse is sensitive right now given that it was controversy over the consulting work of Gov. John Kitzhaber’s fiancee, Cylvia Hayes, that led to his resignation.

Brown’s spokesman, Tony Green, declined to say much about Little, other than to note that he didn’t know if he would take on any title when Brown becomes governor. Oregon’s only other woman governor, Barbara Roberts, was married to state Sen. Frank Roberts, and he was generally referred to by his political title.
