A day after a Texas federal judge ruled to halt President Barack Obama’s immigration plan, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka reiterated his call for expanding the rights of undocumented immigrants. […]
“We are going to move forward with our plans to try and bring our undocumented community into safety here in the city of Newark,” Baraka said.
“We are a free zone.”
Under the program, which Baraka first announced last month, immigrants could use their IDs to open a bank account, own property, utilize city services and perhaps pay taxes, the mayor said.
Baraka said he was working with other New Jersey mayors including Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop to take the lead of New York City, which implemented a municipal ID program a few months ago. […]
There are between 10,000 and 15,000 undocumented immigrants in Newark, according to city officials.
“My father used to say ‘that if everyone went back where they belong, that the airports would be very crowded because none of us belong here if we not Native Americans,'” Baraka joked.
