(CNSNews.com) – House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) blamed Republicans Tuesday for holding “America’s security and freedom” hostage because of their position on the Department of Homeland Security funding at an American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) rally on Capitol Hill.
“Raise your hand if you’re with the Department of Homeland Security,” Hoyer said to the attendees. “Thank you for your service to protect America. And what’s happening? You’re being taken hostage. America’s security and freedom is being taken hostage by the Republicans who won’t pass a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security.”
The rally, which was held in support for federal employees, brought together Democratic leaders and union members, who touted the importance of government and public servants.
“What made America a great country was not that we had rich people and not that we were trying to get some poor people out of being poor. It was that we had this very broad, expansive middle class that made America the country it is, and you’re standing up for every one of them,” said Hoyer.
“We’ve got to be committed, because every working man and woman in this country benefits by those of you who organize, pay up and speak up and march on their behalf as well as your behalf,” he said.
