(WaPo) – The FBI has notified the family of Kayla Mueller, the 26-year-old American woman held hostage by the Islamic State in Syria, that it believes she is dead, according to people familiar with the case.

The Islamic State announced Friday that Mueller had been killed when a Jordanian fighter jet bombed the building where she was being held in Raqqa, the group’s de facto capital. It was the first time the Islamic State had acknowledged it was holding the young woman.

U.S. officials are still unsure how Mueller died, and Jordanian officials have expressed skepticism that she was killed in an airstrike.
