Washington D.C. officials are big believers in President Obama’s “free” community college proposal. So much so, in fact, that one city council member is proposing that they turn the University of the District of Columbia into a tuition-free community college altogether and implement a program to eliminate up-front tuition for four-year degrees.
D.C. Council member Vincent B. Orange announced the proposal Tuesday, according to the Washington Post.
Under Orange’s proposal, UDC’s community college students would have their annual tuition and fees, which total about $2,400, paid by the city if they maintain a 2.0 grade point average, complete studies within two years, and participate in community service and mentoring programs. For four-year degrees, Orange proposed a financing plan that would eliminate up-front tuition and fee costs in exchange for a “commitment to pay a small percentage of his or her adjusted gross income following graduation for a set number of years,” WaPo reported.
“If we provide free tuition,” Orange said, “we will have a better workforce, a better-educated workforce and certainly a more informed workforce.”
