Fans of popular Bay Area rapper Dominic Newton, known as “The Jacka,” were in mourning Tuesday, after police said the singer was shot and killed Monday night in East Oakland.
Newton, 37, died at a Eden Medical Central in Castro Valley after being shot about 8:15 p.m. Monday in the 2500 block of 94th Avenue near MacArthur Boulevard.
About 45 somber friends and others gathered at the site Tuesday morning to mourn and remember him, some clutching open bottles of champagne and others blasting rap from their SUVs parked nearby the spot where police say Newton was gunned down by a high-powered weapon.[…]
A makeshift memorial that included pink and red paper hearts, candles, flowers, liquor bottles and other items had started at the site.
Jackson said Newton “loved his fans. He was a very humble man … a jokester who was always laughing. I can’t believe who would do this. This is just devastating.”
Newton, who authorities believe still lived in Pittsburg, liked to hang out in the area, police were told. He was with several people at the time, some inside and some outside a van, when at least one shooter with a large caliber weapon started firing at them. […]
Jackson said Newton had children and is also survived by his parents, a younger brother and two sisters.
