(AP) – A Yemeni army commander says Shia Houthi rebels have seized the presidential palace in the capital, Sanaa, a move he described as a “coup.”

Colonel Saleh al-Jamalani, the commander of the Presidential Protection Force that guards embattled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, says the rebels swept into the presidential palace on Tuesday afternoon.

He told Associated Press that the rebels were aided by insiders and are looting arm depots on the palace grounds.

Hadi was not at the presidential palace during the takeover but at his residence.

Yemen’s information minister, Nadia al-Saqqaf, said on Tuesday that Hadi’s house was being shelled by “militias seeking to overthrow the ruling system.” She did not specifically name the Houthi fighters.

The Houthis on Monday fought artillery battles with the army near the presidential palace, in some of the most intense fighting in Sanaa in years, and surrounded the prime minister’s residence.
