Amazon.com’s television series Transparent centers around Maura Pfefferman, played by Jeffrey Tambor, who is raising his family as a transgender woman. On Sunday evening, the series was awarded a Golden Globe for “Best TV Series, Comedy or Musical.”

The series’ creator and executive producer, Jill Soloway, accepted the award and dedicated it to the transgender community. The series is based on Soloway’s own dad who revealed himself as transgender to her when she was an adult. Soloway calls him “moppa” — an apparent combination of momma and poppa.

During her acceptance speech, Soloway made a dedication to Leelah Alcorn — the 17-year-old Ohio boy (Josh Alcorn) who wanted to live as a girl but in January, committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a tractor-trailer after feeling rejected by his parents.
