Even though Indianapolis Public Schools were not open for classes Wednesday, five school buildings opened their doors to serve students lunch.

Some students receive their best meal of the day at school and IPS Superintendent Dr. Lewis Ferebee said he did not want them to miss that opportunity.

“It is important for me to insure that our families are fed. I know there are other organization across the city that do that ,but we wanted to make sure that we were involved and engaged. The community knows where the school is and we feel like we can provide families a nutritional meal,” Dr. Ferebee said. […]

There was some dissent about the program. Aaron Rocker is the guardian for two of the kids who came to eat lunch.

“If they can open the schools for the kids to come here for lunch, they should be able to open up the schools for kids to do their schoolwork like any other day,” Rocker said.

The lunch program will be available whenever IPS schools are closed because of weather.
