With 2014 almost over, 126 law enforcement officers have died in the line of duty in this country, a 24 percent increase from the 102 who died in 2013, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund announced on Tuesday.

Gun-related incidents were the leading cause of death, accounting for 50 deaths, a 56 percent increase from the 32 officers killed by gunfire in 2013. Although firearms fatalities increased in 2014, they remain below the decade average of 53, the report noted.

Of the 50 firearms-related police fatalities in 2014, 15 officers were shot and killed in ambush attacks, more than any other circumstance of fatal shootings in 2014.
