Well, it’s obviously unacceptable to have any mishandling of Ebola materials,” White House Ebola czar Ron Klain said on Sunday, following news that a technician at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta may have been exposed to the virus last week.
Press reports said the technician handled a live Ebola sample after it mistakenly was transferred to a lower-security lab on the CDC campus.[…]
“The CDC is a national treasure,” Klain insisted. “People around the world look to us for leadership, for the kind of leadership they provided on the Ebola response. The American people should be very proud of the job that is being done in Atlanta by Dr. Frieden and the team at the CDC.”
But this is not the first time CDC has mishandled dangerous pathogens.
Last June, bioterrorism researchers at CDC sent live anthrax specimens to two lower-security labs at CDC, mistakenly thinking that they were deactivated samples. A month earlier, in May, a CDC laboratory transferred an influenza sample contaminated with a deadly strain of bird flu to a USDA laboratory.
