This is a common claim that you see from the Left, from some Occupiers, for example. The reason? Communism and the view of property. Violence against property doesn’t count as violence. That’s why Occupiers and anarchists look at you funny if you say, “You’re being violent”, because the destruction of property is an essential part of the revolution and isn’t violent.
