Some of the 4,000 surveillance cameras that will be installed along the Texas-Mexico border will be in El Paso, state officials announced earlier this week.

The cameras will be installed along more than 800 miles of border from El Paso to Brownsville.

DPS spokesman Tom Vinger said he would not discuss the location nor how many cameras would be placed in the El Paso area.

“DPS does not discuss specifics related to location or installation of the cameras due to operational security,” Vinger said in an email.

According to a DPS news release, each camera costs approximately $300.

Officials with the El Paso Sheriff Office and the Border Patrol said they have not been notified about possible installation of cameras along the border.

“We haven’t been given any guidance yet as to how many or whether the El Paso sector will be receiving any cameras,” Border Patrol spokesman Ramiro Cordero said.
