A casket bearing the remains of Marion Barry arrived Thursday at the District of Columbia’s city hall, where he had an office for more than three decades.
Barry’s casket will lie in repose at the John A. Wilson Building for 24 hours. Memorial services for the man nicknamed “Mayor for Life” will be held Friday and Saturday. Barry died last month at age 78.
A police color guard escorted Barry’s casket up the steps of the building on Thursday morning, where it was greeted by Mayor Vincent Gray. The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who will eulogize Barry at his memorial on Saturday, walked Barry’s wife and son inside. Barry was a veteran of the civil rights movement like Jackson, a longtime friend and ally.[…]
Jackson will speak at Saturday’s memorial service at the Washington Convention Center. On Friday evening, the Rev. Al Sharpton will deliver the eulogy at a community memorial service in southeast Washington.
