Following a tense exchange with frustrated reporters, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki was caught on a hot mic calling her prepared non-statement on America’s stance on Egypt “ridiculous.”

The incident followed questions Monday from the AP about the State Department’s position on the acquittal of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Psaki responded by reading a scripted statement:

“Generally, we continue to believe that upholding impartial standards of accountability will advance the political consensus on which Egypt’s long-term stability and economic growth depends. But beyond that, I would refer you to the Egyptian government.”

AP reporter Matt Lee pushed back against Psaki’s statement, saying the answer “means nothing.”
