During his remarks about the grand jury decision not to indict the officer who killed Eric Garner with a chokehold, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio revealed that Attorney General Eric Holder and his nominated replacement Loretta Lynch (who also happens to be the U.S. Attorney for the district in which the incident occurred) will pursue a federal investigation into this case.

“The federal government is clearly engaged and poised to act,” Mayor de Blasio said in his press conference. He said that before he met with leaders on Staten Island, he received a phone call from Holder and Lynch. “They made clear that the investigation initiated by the U.S. attorney would now move forward, that it would be done expeditiously. It would be done with a clear sense of independence and that it would be a thorough investigation.”
