(CNSNews.com) — When measured per capita, more patriots from the state of Maine, than from any other state or the District of Columbia have sacrificed their lives fighting for this country in the war in Afghanistan.

Twenty-two service members from Maine have given their lives serving in Afghanistan, according to the CNSNews.com database of Afghan War casualties.

Since Maine’s population was 1,328,302 as of 2013, according to the U.S Census Bureau, the 22 casualties represented 0.0017 percent of the state’s total population, the highest percentage of any state.

The nine states that followed Maine with the highest per-capita Afghan War casualty rates were: Oklahoma, Wyoming, New Hampshire, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Kansas, Kentucky and Arkansas.
