DERRY, N.H. (WCVB) — An election worker in Derry claims she’s off the job because she said “God bless you” at the polls.
A national group and some state representatives are criticizing election officials, and the woman said her First Amendment rights are being stepped on. But town officials said the worker had a track record, and it had nothing to do with “God bless you.”
Renee Routhier, the supervisor of checklists in Derry, said election worker Ruth Provencal wasn’t fired. She just wasn’t invited back to work in the general election because she committed possible misdemeanors.
Provencal said she is a devout Catholic who has been an election poll worker in Derry for the past two years. But she said she was told she couldn’t work last week’s election because she used the phrase “God bless you” multiple times.
“She said, ‘That’s against the rules. That’s not politically correct,'” Provencal said.
