Speaking at a breakfast sponsored by the Transport Workers Local 100 union in Harlem last week, Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) said that union organizing, raising the minimum wage, and unemployment compensation are “spiritual damn things” and he didn’t know “where the hell” spiritual leaders were on shelter and homelessness.

“The things we believe in are spiritual damn things. You can talk about the union organizing and raising the minimum wage and extensive unemployment compensation, but isn’t that the same thing as talking about someone that’s hungry, that’s thirsty, that’s naked, that’s in prison. All of these things – I’m not preaching – are things that people should be involved in and helping the unions make this a better country,” he said.

“Now I don’t know where the hell the spiritual leaders are going to be, but I haven’t heard their voices when it comes to shelter. That has to be a part of Matthews 25th in terms of how do you treat the less of my brothers and sisters,” Rangel said.
