A California school district will comply with a letter sent by the American Humanist Association on behalf of an 11-year-old atheist student defending his legal right to remain seated during the Pledge of Allegiance.
The district will also issue an apology to the student, Ivan Covarrubias, as requested by the AHA on behalf of his teacher, identified only as Mr. Burns, for “lecturing” Ivan on the merits of standing during the Pledge. Mr. Burns was also pressured to remove a banner from his classroom that read, “Prayer Changes Things.”
