Jersey City, New Jersey (My9NJ) – Mayor Steven Fulop’s chief of staff, Muhammed Akil, has decided to resign a week after news broke that 20-years-ago he made racially inflammatory remarks in a speech at a conference in Chicago.

As Chasing previously reported, Akil’s comments included: “all white people have a little Hitler in them,” as well as referring to the Pope as the “anti-Christ”. Akil also repeatedly used homophobic slurs.

However, while Akil may have stepped down from his $120,000 a year job as the Mayor’s chief of staff, he will stay on the city’s payroll as a systems analyst with the health department, making about $85,000 a year.

Mayor Fulop was not available for comment on Akil’s resignation, but previously he was quick to defend his staffer after his comments were originally made public.

“…As the grandson of holocaust survivors myself they are offensive, however, I also know people change and grow over time and the comments made 20 years ago is not consistent nor reflective of the person I have known for the last 10 years,” Mayor Fulop said weeks ago.
