The newly hired chief of staff for a Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania was a top employee at a group involved in a secretive scheme to funnel federal funds to help repay the politician’s illegal campaign loan.

“I could not be prouder of the work of the Educational Advancement Alliance, and Roger’s success there helping more than 20,000 African American and Hispanic professionals earn graduate degrees,” Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-Pa.) said in a statement regarding a new hire in his office. “He is an extraordinarily capable public servant, and I am thrilled to have him join my congressional office in this role.”

However, Roger Jackson, the man recently hired to be Rep. Fattah’s chief of staff and who he spoke of in such high regards, controlled the operations for a nonprofit the congressman founded which federal investigators say was at the center of an elaborate ploy to misuse taxpayer funds.
