A new Wendy Davis TV ad slams Republican opponent Greg Abbott for winning a seven-figure settlement from his tree-limb accident lawsuit nearly three decades ago, and then trying as one of the state’s nine Supreme Court justices or its top lawyer to thwart other injured Texans’ resort to the courts.

The Abbott campaign immediately denounced the 30-second spot, which began running Friday. The ad is “disgusting” and an “historic low,” the Abbott camp said in a statement.

Davis’ spot opens with a black-and-white still photo of an empty wheelchair, as ominous music plays in the background.

Abbott, who has used a wheelchair since his personal calamity as a young law school graduate in 1984, isn’t shown in her commercial.

But Davis, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee, casts him as a hypocrite.

“A tree fell on Greg Abbott. He sued and got millions. Since then, he’s spent his career working against other victims,” a narrator says of Abbott, who after three terms as attorney general is trying to follow Gov. Rick Perry in the governor’s office.
