An American freelancing for NBC News in Liberia has tested positive for the Ebola virus, the news network announced Thursday.

The 33-year-old cameraman started showing symptoms of the virus on Wednesday — one day after hired as a second cameraman for NBC News Chief Medical Editor and Correspondent Dr. Nancy Snyderman.

The man, whose name is being withheld at his family’s request, had been working in Liberia for the past three years before contracting the virus, according to NBC.
