The American Humanist Association claims that a student at Right Choices Alternative School in Beaufort has been disciplined multiple times for not standing up and saying the Pledge of Allegiance. The district said they were caught off guard by the accusations.
“We have investigated it,” Dr. Gregory McCord, with the Beaufort County District Office said. “We have not been able to confirm any reports to a teacher or an administrator, no one here at the district’s office has received any type of complaint from a student, or parent for that matter.”
“If the administration’s position is they didn’t know about it until now, our response is well now you know about it, so do something about it,” David Niose, legal director for the American Humanist Association stated.
Representatives from the D.C. based organization said the anonymous 9th grader voiced his concerns to his teacher, and nothing was done. The letter to the school district claims the student’s teacher told him that not participating in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance was unpatriotic.
