Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canada is open to a direct military contribution to United States-led efforts against ISIS in Iraq.

“We haven’t ruled out anything, ” Harper told a business audience Wednesday in New York City.

Conservative MP James Bezan told the House of Commons Wednesday that the government will look at renewing Canada’s the non-combat deployment to Iraq when its deadline ends in early October.

In September, Canada deployed several troops, including special forces, to Iraq in an advisory role. It is also offering logistical support the the U.S.-led mission.

Harper said the oil and gas boom in North America could mean the continent would eventually become not just self-sufficient energy-wise, but an exporter of energy to allies in Europe.

“There’s tremendous opportunity through that to shift not just Russia-Ukraine, but a whole bunch of other geopolitical realities in the world longer term,” he said.
