(CNSNews.com) – The National Institutes of Health through the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has given the University of Texas San Antonio $72,000 to develop a vaccine against chlamydia in guinea pigs.
The study cites chlamydia trachomatis as “the leading cause of bacterial sexually transmitted disease worldwide.”
“Untreated genital chlamydial infections cause serious sequelae such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. A licensed vaccine, which is considered to be the ideal way to limit Chlamydia-induced morbidity, is currently not available,” the grant abstract said.
Researchers have found a vaccine against Chlamydia has shown promise in mice and theorize that it may work in guinea pigs, which have similar “pathogenesis and immunity to chlamydial infection” as humans.
