The President and Mrs. Obama are coming to Park Forest-Chicago Heights School District 163 — at least in a manner of speaking.
As part of a realignment of district schools, which took effect with the start of this school year, the former Beacon Hill school has been renamed the Barack Obama School of Leadership and Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, the district said Friday in a news release.
Forest Trail school is now the Michelle Obama School of Technology and the Arts, the district said.
Students in fourth through eighth grades attend the two schools.
“The Obama name was selected for the two schools because the values that the First Family models are unparalleled precedents and are values that our students strive to emulate. I believe we are the first schools in the nation to honor the First Family in this manner,” District 163 Supt. Joyce Carmine said in the release.
The Barack Obama school, the district said, will promote the national objectives of improved education in science, technology, engineering and math through learning engagements that focus on student interests. The Michelle Obama school will focus on technology and the arts with an enhanced curriculum that focuses on theater, show choir and visual arts, according to the district.
