Five people were shot, one fatally, and another person died in a car crash after a vigil on Detroit’s west side early this morning.

The details of the shooting in the city’s Brightmoor neighborhood have evolved as police investigate the incident that unfolded at about 2 a.m., Detroit Police Chief James Craig said during a news conference, where he noted that witnesses are not cooperating. Earlier reports said three people had been killed. […]

The chaos of the shooting continued as people fled the location. Police in the area pursued a vehicle leaving the scene, and that vehicle crashed into a fire hydrant in the 9300 block of Burt Road, ejecting a woman who died. Later, five people were arrested at Sinai-Grace Hospital because of a melee there that included one person being beaten while he was on a gurney.

Neighbors and relatives of those involved described a wild scene.

“They just started shooting,” said Toriana Nicholson, 18, who was at the crash scene trying to find out if her 36-year-old uncle was OK. “So many innocent people got hit.”

Benita Reed, 35, of Ecorse, who had relatives involved in the incidents, and Nicholson were in a crowd of about 20 people watching at about 6:15 a.m. as a woman’s body was removed from the crash scene on Burt. The unidentified woman had been ejected from a red car that drove through four yards, taking out a hurricane fence and a fire hydrant.
