Police say someone threw a Molotov cocktail through a window at Congressman Emanuel Cleaver’s Kansas City district office.

This is the second incident within the last six years when someone attempted to throw an item or items at the building, said Cleaver’s chief of staff John Jones.

A security alarm alerted police shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday to a smashed window at the building at 101 W. 31 St.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a broken window on the northwest side of the building.

On the ground below the window, police found two broken bottles with paper towels sticking out the necks of the bottles resembling a Molotov cocktail.

There was also a chemical odor resembling that of lighter fluid, police said. Investigators say the homemade explosive did not blow up, and there did not appear to be any fire damage to the building.[…]

“Let’s not dwell on a small incident that happened and hurt no one,” Cleaver said in a tweet. “Thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those killed on 9/11.”

Congressional Black Caucus Chair Marcia L. Fudge of Ohio released a statement condemning the attempted arson attack.

“The Congressional Black Caucus strongly condemns this type of vandalism targeted at Congressman Cleaver, and denounces any act of violence towards Members of Congress. This type of abhorrent behavior is the most ineffective means of voicing discontent or disagreement.

“I expect a speedy, full, and thorough investigation into this incident by law enforcement, so that those responsible are swiftly apprehended and prosecuted. The person or persons responsible for what happened this morning must be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
