Steven Sotloff, the kidnapped journalist who was beheaded by a masked ISIS militant in a gruesome video released Tuesday, held dual Israeli-US citizenship.
Details of his connection with Israel had been kept secret for fear of endangering his life.
“Cleared for publication: Steven Sotloff was Israel citizen RIP,” Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Paul Hirschson tweeted Wednesday.
The 31-year-old Jewish-American journalist briefly lived in Israel, where he joined a rugby club and took classes at the Interdisciplinary Center before embarking on his freelance journalism career, the Jerusalem Post reported.
