Atheists United San Luis Obispo, which challenged Pismo Beach’s now-defunct practice of starting City Council meetings with prayers that frequently used “explicitly Christian turns of phrase,” plans to participate in invocations in other cities.

The nonprofit organization announced in a news release that it plans to get on the regular rotation for city council invocations in Arroyo Grande and Paso Robles and will use the time “to advocate for using reason and science to solve problems and for secular values such as kindness and equality.”

“While we think that our city governments’ time would be better spent governing and not praying, if a council insists on holding invocations, Atheists United will be there to ensure that the non-believers in our community are represented,” group President Steven Arkowitz said in the news release. Earlier this year, Pismo Beach officials agreed to end its city chaplain program — and to end all prayers before City Council meetings — to settle a lawsuit brought against the city in November 2013.
