The Algiers pastor arrested in a shooting outside his church struck a fleeing copper thief twice in the back of the head, an arrest warrant obtained Friday says.
At first, the truck carrying two men drove toward the Rev. W.L.T. Littleton, so Littleton opened fire, the warrant says. But he kept shooting after the truck passed, the warrant says, which is the basis for a charge of aggravated battery.
The man struck in the head, Rodney Mitchell, 50, was in serious condition at an area hospital. The driver of the truck, Joseph Cross, 34, was booked on a copper theft charge.
Littleton, 62, a former New Orleans police officer and a local radio personality, was not immediately arrested after the shooting Wednesday. He was questioned by NOPD after turning over his gun. But he was allowed to go home, and turned himself in about 24 hours after the shooting.
Police said Littleton spotted the suspicious men outside the Greater Morning Star Baptist Church on Vallette Street around 4:20 p.m. He got his semi-automatic pistol from his SUV and confronted the two men, Littleton told police.
